One question I see asked a lot is how to get started with WordPress, how to install WordPress, and what is the first step. It’s really very simple to install WordPress on your web host and you don’t even know anything technical. In fact, I bet you can install it in under 5 minutes!
First of all, you’ll need to use a host with cPanel to do this. More specifically, your host needs to offer “1-click installer” like Softaculous. I’m going to be using my favorite host, SiteGround for this tutorial. You can save 60% when you sign up for web hosting today!
Login in to your hosting account and go to My Accounts then click the Go To Cpanel button. Next you’ll navigate to the Autoinstallers section and select WordPress. If you’re not using SiteGround you may have to click on something else like Softaculous or your hosting’s preferred 1-click installer.
Click the blue Install button to get started. This where you’ll configure your installation of WordPress. I also recommend setting up the free SSL certificate you get with SiteGround. You can do that by clicking on the Let’s Encrypt icon in the Cpanel (do this first).
Let’s go over each setting briefly:
Choose Protocol – If you do have SSL installed for your domain then select https:// otherwise you’ll choose http:// or http://www. Having the w’s is totally up to you!
Choose Domain – You should see every domain you’ve added to your account. Choose the one you are making a website for.
In Directory – You’ll typically leave this blank unless you want your installation in a specific folder.
Site Name – This is your website name. You can always change this later by going into your WordPress settings.
Site Description – Your website’s tagline. This can also be changed later.
Enable Multisite – You’ll most likely leave this unchecked.
Admin Username – Select your account’s username. Make this something secure which means not admin and not your website’s name.
Admin Password – Again, make this very secure. Usually it will generate a password for you.
Admin Email – Use your email address here.
I don’t mess with anymore of the settings. Your installer may have some extra features like themes, plugins, or backups. Feel free to see what features are available and pick and choose what you need.
When you’re done, click Install and watch the magic happen! After the installation is complete you’ll be given the link to your website and admin panel so you can go login.
Voila! That only took a couple of minutes, right?
So what’s next
Next, I recommend changing your permalinks from the default to Post Name. You can do this by going to Settings > Permalinks. This is important so that you don’t run into problems later.
You’ll also want to get a high-quality theme that is customizable and fits your needs. I recommend any of the beautiful themes at Coded Creative which are perfect for bloggers, online stores, and entrepreneurs. If you want something that you can tweak to your heart’s content, then the Tweak Me V2 theme is exactly what you need.
Finally, install important plugins that will help you optimize your website, add important functionality, and bring your website to the next level. Be sure to check out the 10 free plugins I recommend for any WordPress site.
